Research conducted by RBR has shown that Asia-Pacific is the largest and the fastest growing region for payment card spend, with forecasts predicting an annual expenditure of $19.5 trillion by 2020. However, card expenditure per person remains low and the card outlet to population ratio is far below the global average in the region, the study noted. Cash payments are still heavily used as some countries have been slow to integrate card payment retailers. But official campaigns and a growth in card acceptance in countries such as Malaysia and Thailand saw the value of card payments in 2014 reach $9 trillion â a 25 per cent increase on the previous year.
